RP MASCOT

SKETCH

DESCRIPTION

I’d like to represent RP’s “Problem-based learning” with “Ant” which has the well-established behaviour of teaching and learning, so called “Tandem Running”.

For Tandem Running Concept~
When a scout ant discovers a new food source or a better nesting site, it usually returns to its colony and recruits nest mates to these places in which followers are guided by the odour alone. That communication technique is so called Tandem Running recruitment.
During tandem running the follower ant keeps close antennal contact with the leader ant. Both stay together through each twist and turn. In case they loose each other, the leader ant halts while the follower moves in searching circles.
To sum up, tandem running involves the bidirectional behaviour indicates that it could be the value of information and also the self-directed study.

For RP’s PBL concept~
As a team, we have five members in a group and each group has a leader respectively. For the first step of PBL, a leader leads the team to define the problem by warming up questions to come out the ideas at the first meeting of a day.

From the first meeting onwards, a leader keeps in touch with team members to solve the problem together. At that moment, the team members are also searching the resources and answers, and the leader consolidates the data, analyses information and seeks for required further information.

During those meetings, all members are teaching things to each other and learning from each other and resources. Furthermore, a facilitator plays a part in instructing the class which approaches to “student-centered” teaching technique to be more alive class environment.

To sum up, like the tandem running method, our RP’s Problem-based learning method involves the active, bidirectional feedback by integrating of knowledge, linking the fields from different team members’ points of view.

Character Analysis
The name of mascot name is “Formīca” which refers to “Ant” from Latin word. A green ant represents RP’s Problem-based learning method and there are three colours involved which is Green, Black and White. The shape of body show ‘badge of honour’ that signifies the pride we take in education at the Republic. Cast in green, black and white, it eloquently symbolises the freshness, vigour, modernity and cleanness of a student. Besides, We can use this character as a costume of RP at every celebration/party. That’s why I did choose such kind of cartoon character instead of using realistic character.
